Tokyo weather, explained

How to read the Tokyo forecast

A good forecast is really three views at once. The current panel tells you what it feels like outside right now, which is what matters before you head out. The hourly strip is for planning your day: when the rain band arrives, when the humidity peaks, when it cools enough for a walk. The seven-day outlook is most reliable for the first three or four days. Tokyo weather can shift rapidly during typhoon season, so reading the full picture before heading out pays off.

Tokyo weather and the seasons

Tokyo has four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures regularly reaching 35°C and humidity above 80 per cent from July through August. Typhoons track through the Kanto region from June to October, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons: mild, clear days with low humidity. Winters are dry and sunny but cold, with temperatures occasionally dipping near zero overnight. The surrounding mountains funnel cold north-westerly winds into the city in January and February.

What the UV index means in Tokyo

Tokyo sits at 35 degrees north, which still puts it in a UV range that surprises people used to European summers. On clear summer days the UV index can reach 10 or above around solar noon, meaning unprotected skin can burn in fifteen minutes. The index peaks at solar noon, not at the hottest part of the afternoon. Below 3 is low. From 3 to 7 sunscreen is worthwhile. Above 8, a hat, sunscreen and shade are all genuinely useful, especially during humid summer afternoons when people underestimate how long they have been outdoors.
