How we reported this

Yanaka residents can sign up next week for new group swim sessions at two neighbourhood aquatic centres, with classes scheduled to begin July 20.
The summer timing coincides with peak heat and a local push to increase daily movement for all ages after last year’s participation numbers fell short of targets set by the Yanaka Wellness Association. Officials have added early-morning lanes and evening family slots to fit work and school schedules along Kototoi-dori and the narrow streets around the old cemetery.
The Yanaka Aqua Plaza on Sendagi Street will host parent-and-tot lessons on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, while the Nippori Community Pool runs mixed-level adult lanes and senior water-walking groups every weekday afternoon. Both sites belong to the same city-run network and share an online booking system that opened for the first time last summer.
Family and youth offerings
Children aged five to twelve can join 45-minute stroke clinics that meet three times a week at the Nippori site, with groups capped at twelve swimmers. Parents who register by July 15 pay 6,000 yen for the full four-week block, a rate that includes use of the changing rooms and a basic kickboard set. Last season 312 children completed similar blocks, according to figures released by the association in May.
Adult and senior sessions
Adults and seniors have separate options at the Aqua Plaza, including 30-minute aqua aerobics at 8 a.m. and a slower-paced arthritis-friendly class at 2 p.m. Each session costs 800 yen when paid individually or 7,200 yen for a ten-class pass. The association recorded 1,180 total adult visits across both pools during the same period last year, with the largest turnout on weekdays after 4 p.m.
People who want to join can register through the Yanaka Wellness Association website or in person at either pool office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Staff recommend bringing a medical certificate for anyone over 65 who has not used the facilities in the past year. Spots are first-come, first-served and tend to fill by the end of the first registration week.
