How we reported this
The Yanaka Free Stress Relief Center opened expanded drop-in hours on July 1 at its site on Sendagi Street, giving walk-in access to counselors on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Heat and longer daylight hours have pushed more people in the district to seek help for sleep trouble and short tempers. The Yanaka Health Office noted a steady rise in residents asking about local options since the start of the rainy season in June.
Two spots on the ground
One main location sits inside the former post office building on Kototoi-dori, run by the Yanaka Neighborhood Association. Staff there hand out same-day 30-minute talks and hand out printed guides to breathing exercises. A second program meets every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at the small annex of Yanaka Library near the west gate of the cemetery, where groups of eight to ten people practice short guided walks along the back lanes off Nippori Street.
Both places require no appointment or payment. Visitors simply sign a sheet at the desk and wait their turn. The library sessions finish by 5 p.m. so participants can still catch the last trains on the Keisei Line.
Numbers and next steps
A June 2026 report from the district health bureau counted 1,200 visits to free mental health services in the first six months of the year, compared with 850 during the same period in 2025. Most first-time users came from addresses within a 15-minute walk of Yanaka Station.
Anyone unsure where to start can ring the district hotline at 03-3827-4411 between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. The line connects callers to the nearest open session that day. For those who prefer to go in person, the Sendagi Street center keeps a printed map of all current free programs posted on its front window.
