Yanaka Residents Battle Sleep Loss From Screens, Neighborhood Noise
Rising screen exposure and neighborhood noise are cutting into rest for residents along Kototoi-dori and around Nezu Shrine.
How we reported this

More than 40 percent of adults living near Yanaka Ginza reported sleeping under six hours on weeknights in a 2025 survey by the local residents association. That figure marks a sharp rise from earlier tallies and lines up with complaints about late-night deliveries and bright storefront LEDs that stay on until after midnight.
The change matters now because Yanaka’s narrow streets and wooden homes transmit sound easily. Residents on Sendagi’s side streets say the 2024 opening of a new convenience store at the corner of Kototoi-dori brought extra truck traffic at 2 a.m. At the same time, many households added second screens for remote work, pushing bedtime later by an average of 47 minutes according to the same survey.
Local programs already testing fixes
Two initiatives have started inside the neighborhood. The Yanaka Cultural Center on Shinobazu-dori began a monthly 90-minute sleep workshop in March 2026 that costs 2,500 yen and limits enrollment to 12 people. Participants learn to dim lights after 9 p.m. and use white-noise apps tuned to temple-bell frequencies recorded at nearby Nezu Shrine. A second effort runs through the Yanaka Ginza Merchants Cooperative, which agreed in May to switch off exterior LEDs by 11 p.m. on weekdays after complaints from upstairs residents.
Data from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s 2025 health check showed that adults in the Taito ward who kept consistent bedtimes gained an extra 38 minutes of deep sleep per night compared with those who varied by more than an hour. The same report listed average annual spending on sleep aids in central Tokyo at 18,400 yen per household, mostly on blackout curtains and low-wattage bulbs.
Practical steps residents can start tonight
People on the ground recommend simple changes first. Turn off the phone charger light and close the sliding door to the engawa before 10 p.m. Walk the short loop past the Yanaka Cemetery gates at dusk instead of scrolling indoors. Those who joined the Cultural Center sessions say the biggest gain came from moving the last cup of coffee to before 2 p.m. and keeping the bedroom temperature at 24 degrees Celsius with a small fan. Local clinics advise anyone still waking before 5 a.m. to speak with a doctor rather than buy another gadget.
