Yanaka Sleep Clinics Overbooked as Demand Surges; What You Should Know
Demand for overnight polysomnography has jumped sharply across Yanaka's wellness district, and practitioners say most patients arrive years too late.

How we reported this

Referrals to Yanaka's accredited sleep clinics rose 34 percent between January and June 2026, according to figures released last week by the Yanaka Community Health Network. The surge is straining capacity at the two main facilities in the area, and waiting times that once sat at two or three weeks have crept past six weeks at peak periods.
The timing matters. Disrupted sleep has become one of the more loudly debated topics in wellness circles this year, partly because of growing public conversation around hormones, melatonin, cortisol, the downstream effects of testosterone and oestrogen fluctuations, and their direct influence on sleep architecture. Practitioners here say that broader awareness is sending more people to their GP for referrals earlier, which is, on balance, a good thing. But awareness alone doesn't create clinic beds.
Where Yanaka Residents Are Going
The two main options for residents are the Nezu Sleep and Respiratory Centre on Yanaka Ginza's northern stretch and the Ueno-Sakuragi Wellness Clinic, which added a four-bed sleep study unit in March 2025. Both facilities are accredited under Japan's Clinical Sleep Medicine standards and run full polysomnography, the overnight test that monitors brain activity, oxygen levels, eye movement and muscle function simultaneously. A full in-lab study at either centre runs between ¥28,000 and ¥45,000 depending on the complexity of the diagnostic package, though national health insurance covers a significant portion when a physician has issued a formal referral citing suspected obstructive sleep apnoea or a related disorder.
The Yanaka Health Walk, a community wellness initiative that has operated out of Yanesen Community Plaza on Hongo-dori since 2019, began incorporating sleep hygiene workshops into its monthly program in April this year. Attendance at those sessions has averaged 40 residents per session, and the coordinators have partnered directly with Nezu Sleep and Respiratory Centre to offer on-the-spot referral information, though, as always, anyone with concerns about their own sleep should speak with their own physician before booking any diagnostic test.
For residents who can't wait six weeks or who want a preliminary look before committing to an overnight lab study, the Ueno-Sakuragi clinic introduced home sleep testing kits in late 2025. The portable devices, worn for a single night at home, measure respiratory effort and blood oxygen saturation. They are not a replacement for full polysomnography, particularly for patients where non-apnoea disorders like restless legs syndrome or parasomnias are suspected, but they cost roughly ¥8,500 out of pocket and can produce results within a week. Clinicians use the data to triage: patients who show moderate-to-severe respiratory disruption go straight onto the in-lab waiting list with higher priority.
What the Evidence Actually Shows
Globally, the World Health Organization estimated in 2023 that roughly one in three adults in urbanised areas gets fewer than the recommended seven hours of sleep per night. Closer to home, a 2025 survey conducted across Bunkyo and Taito wards, the two administrative areas that bracket Yanaka, found that 41 percent of respondents over 40 reported waking feeling unrefreshed at least four mornings per week. That figure climbed to 52 percent among respondents working irregular or shift-based hours.
Untreated obstructive sleep apnoea is the diagnosis practitioners here most frequently see missed for years. Left unmanaged, it is associated with elevated cardiovascular risk, metabolic disruption and, perhaps most visibly in a neighbourhood as active as Yanaka, impaired daytime function that undercuts everything from a morning trail run to a focused afternoon at the studio.
If you are considering a sleep study, the practical first step is a GP visit, not a direct booking. A physician referral unlocks insurance coverage and ensures the right test gets ordered. The Yanaka Community Health Network maintains an updated list of accredited local facilities at its office on Dango-zaka, and the Ueno-Sakuragi Wellness Clinic holds a free 30-minute information session for prospective patients every second Tuesday. Bring a two-week sleep diary if you can manage it; practitioners say it meaningfully shortens the initial consultation.
