Locals in Toshima ward have kept steady foot traffic on two narrow trails that wind through small wooded strips and along a canal edge, places that see almost no foreign visitors on weekday mornings.

The interest has grown this July because many residents seek cooler shaded routes instead of the open plazas around major stations when daytime temperatures climb past 30 degrees.

Two overlooked routes

One path begins at the west side of Minami-Ikebukuro Park and follows an unmarked dirt track behind the local library on Meiji-dori before dropping down to the narrow canal that runs toward Kanamecho. A second route starts near the rear entrance of the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Space on Higashi-Ikebukuro 1-chome and loops through the thin strip of trees that borders the old Nakasendo alignment before rejoining Otome Road at its quieter northern end. The Toshima Ward Parks Division recorded 42,000 visits to these secondary paths during the 2025 fiscal year, a figure drawn from sensor data installed along the canal segment in April of that year. Entry remains free, though the ward charges 300 yen for use of nearby public restrooms that stay open until 7 p.m. each day.

Practical steps for first-time walkers

Start at the south gate of Minami-Ikebukuro Park before 9 a.m. to avoid the brief morning rush of commuters cutting through on bicycles. Carry water from the vending machines at the park entrance, since no shops sit along the canal stretch itself. The full loop on either route takes roughly 45 minutes at a steady pace and connects back to the station via side streets that avoid the main shopping crowds. Ward staff recommend checking the daily heat index posted at the Ikebukuro Community Center before heading out during peak summer weeks.
