How we reported this
More than 2,800 Toshima residents logged entries last month on the ward’s free outdoor fitness map for two unmarked routes that skirt the edges of Ikebukuro’s built-up blocks.
The routes matter now because July temperatures in central Tokyo already hit 31 degrees by mid-morning, pushing office workers and students toward shaded corridors rather than the exposed plazas around Sunshine City. Ward health staff recorded a 19 percent rise in park-permit applications between April and June compared with the same period in 2025.
Two routes inside the ward
One path begins at the north exit of Mejiro Station, drops behind the old concrete retaining wall along Mejiro-dori and follows a narrow strip of camphor trees beside the former canal bed for 1.4 kilometres until it reaches the fitness pull-up bars at Nishi-Ikebukuro 3-chome Park. The second starts behind the Toshima Ward Office on Meiji-dori, crosses the small bridge over Shakujii River tributary and climbs a cedar-lined embankment that ends at the free calisthenics area beside Zoshigaya’s back gate.
Both stretches stay inside postal codes 170-0001 and 171-0021, yet they appear on none of the tourist apps that route visitors toward the Ghibli Museum or Otome Road. Local running clubs, including the Ikebukuro Striders, use the routes for weekday 6 a.m. intervals because the tree cover keeps ground temperature four degrees cooler than the main shopping streets.
Numbers that guide use
Toshima’s 2025 resident survey showed 47 percent of adults aged 30 to 55 walk or jog at least three times a week; the same report listed average monthly spend on indoor gym memberships at 4,800 yen. The two hidden corridors cost nothing and stay open from 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. without gates. A single water fountain at each end was upgraded in March with new filtration units funded by the ward’s Green Corridor budget.
Visitors who want to try the walks can download the Toshima Wellness Map PDF from the ward website or pick up a paper copy at the Nishi-Ikebukuro library counter. Morning light is strongest on the Mejiro side before 8 a.m.; the Shakujii embankment offers shade after 4 p.m. Ward staff advise carrying a refillable bottle and checking the real-time heat index posted at both park entrances.
