How we reported this

Shimokitazawa has undergone major commercial redevelopment following the 2013 and 2019 underground relocation of the Odakyu Line tracks, which freed up a 1.7-kilometer strip of land for new development. This shift created opportunities for commercial projects along the former rail route.
Key Infrastructure Changes and Land Use
The relocation of Odakyu Line tracks opened space previously occupied by surface rail lines. The freed land allowed for new commercial facilities, event spaces, and related amenities. Projects built on this corridor reflect investment in reusing the 1.7-kilometer area for mixed-use purposes.
Named Commercial Projects and Opening Dates
Mikan Shimokita opened on March 30, 2022, as a five-story complex under the Keio Inokashira line tracks. It includes around 20 tenants such as TSUTAYA BOOKSTORE and a library counter. Shimokita Senrogai officially opened on May 28, 2022, and features commercial facilities, a hot spring inn, student dormitories, and event spaces along the former Odakyu line route. Reload opened in June 2021 as a two-story commercial space developed by Odakyu. Bonus Track opened in April 2020 as an outdoor creative commercial space with 14 tenants. Nansei Plus opened on January 20, 2022, and includes a mini-cinema along with eight tenants.
Neighborhood Context and External Recognition
Shimokitazawa ranked 7th in Time Out's 50 coolest neighborhoods in the world list in 2022. The area has moved from a counterculture hub toward a multi-generational commercial area while retaining its bohemian atmosphere. These shifts connect to the commercial projects listed above.
Investment in these facilities followed the track relocation and focused on specific sites along the former rail corridor. Local businesses and operators have occupied the new spaces at the named complexes. The pattern shows sequential openings from 2020 through 2022 that used the available land for retail, hospitality, and community uses.
Further activity in the neighborhood will depend on continued operation of the existing facilities and any additional reuse of land along the corridor. Residents and visitors can track updates through the operators of Mikan Shimokita, Shimokita Senrogai, Reload, Bonus Track, and Nansei Plus.
